Art is considered by many as an indulgence. An extra activity or afterthought that is only for those that have nothing more important to do. If you are a regular reader here, I can hear you saying “But art is an important part of life!” Yes I agree. But can I challenge you and ask if you are finding the time to create daily? Or do you have those pesky voices in your head telling you not to ‘waste’ your time doing art when you have other necessary things to do, or even worse, not to be selfish and indulgent.
As we head towards the end of the year, let me spend a few minutes reminding you of the importance of your creative life. Yes, ART MATTERS!
It matters to be putting time aside in your day for creative activities. For some of us it’s a matter of sanity. A contemplative space where we can quite down. Where we can give ourselves time to hear our souls longings. Where we can rest or where we can explore – all rejuvenating stuff. We can create our own sacred space – just us and God. It’s a process that leaves us feeling satisfied, and fulfilled. There can be a letting go, a discovery or a breakthrough, after which we have so much more to offer the world.
We learn to see what we look at, to hear what we listen to, and feel what we touch. There are so many lessons to be learnt and shared through creating. Lessons on perfectionism, balance, letting go, letting things just be, acceptance, the list could go on….
Without us giving ourselves the space to create, we miss valuable lessons. Things that may surprise us, that affect our loved ones close to home and the world at large. Even large corporations are recognizing the benefits of creativity and are starting to make it available to their employees. Schools have realized the amazing progress of students involved in creative practices, both in their values and in their academic success. It helps them to stretch their minds beyond the boundaries of the printed text or the rules of what is provable.
Art helps in seeking, finding, and developing solutions to the many problems facing our society today. It teaches tolerance and coping with uncertainties. Imagine a world where the needs of the human spirit are consistently given expression and met through words, music, dance, and visual art. And it starts with the individual!
So, if you arn’t already, how about setting up a little corner to create. Choose the best time of day and even for just 15 minutes a day, start your art making.
